Dear Acquired Taste Readers,
I first created Acquired Taste in 2008 as an outlet for post-grad musings (and let’s be real—complaining) while sitting behind a desk job trying to make sense of what it means to be a twenty-something with a useless English degree. Though I certainly have not figured that out, my tastes have changed and evolved in a way that has left me feeling more confident and satisfied in what I bring to the world and what it brings to me.
Today Acquired Taste serves as an outlet for creativity, analysis, experiment, and fun. I admit I sometimes long for the blogless days of letter writing, hardcover books, and more face time instead of facebook; but we live in a perpetually forward moving society and getting on board does not necessarily mean selling out to cyberspace. Over the past few years I’ve also been working on a non-fiction piece that I hope to have completed by 2015. Writing a book is exhausting. Promising you’ll finish it, terrifying. It’s a lot of work and not at all what I would describe as “fun.” When it’s finished, I’ll need to take a long European vacation to recover.
In the meantime, I’m having a baby. You may have heard about that over on Baby Baer, a blog I started last fall as a way to update family and friends on the pregnancy and eventual baby while we make the transition to medical school. Much to my surprise, I’ve gained a fair amount of readers along the way and have decided to combine both Baby Baer and Acquired Taste into a .com project (and way to stay sane) while I’m home with the baby.
There are lots of Mommy blogs. Don’t believe me? Check out this list. I think part of it is due to a national movement back to domesticity. Only this time, we want to do it without the Prozac. Staying connected to others is a way many women cope with the realities of motherhood, and blogging is an easy way to do so.
Baby Baer blog was cute and it served its purpose well, but at the end of the day it’s not all about the baby. It’s also about me, what I’m interested in and passionate about, along with navigating motherhood and all the various joys and growing pains that come along with it. Of course Baby Baer will be one of our main attractions, just not the only one.
A special note to subscribers: I believe that we all have a story to share whether it’s through song, poetry, blogs, or a conversation over tea. Thank you for subscribing to Acquired Taste and following my story over the past three years. Your continued support is much appreciated. I’m excited to see you over on Motley Mama!
